How common it is: Second-device use among children is documented across safety guidance. Specific rate of school-managed devices joining a home Wi-Fi is not established.

Detection

The home router’s client list shows a new device whose hostname or DHCP fingerprint does not match the household inventory; the device is one the household has not administered.

Fix (technical)

Confirm with the child what device has joined the Wi-Fi and what rules the issuing institution applies. Do not assume the home router’s parental plan reaches the school device; the device’s own management is the layer the issuing institution uses.

Fix (relational)

A device from school or the library is the child’s responsibility too. Treat the conversation as a coordination moment between the household and the issuing institution.

Residual risk

The school or library device may carry rules that are stricter or looser than the household’s. Reviewing the rules on the device itself, with the issuing institution, is the durable fix.
